Receiving medical care and undergoing blood draws, biopsies and examinations can be difficult to handle at times. Also, when you figure in the time that it takes to get your test results, it really can be emotionally taxing.
We put ourselves through the myriad of tests because we believe that medical treatment will help our diagnosis and that we will ultimately get better. Our hope is that the doctor will tell us that everything concerning our health is good, that we are in recovery, and that we can go about our lives without any further medical intervention.
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we may get bad news from that doctor. Also, that bad news is unexpected, which can compound the hurt that we may feel. In this situation, anyone will have a flood of emotions that can cause intense heartache and anxiety. Read on to learn how four different ways to handle bad news from your doctor.
- Breathe. Take in the information that the doctor is giving you. It can be easy to protest or argue with the doctor, but as you are in the moment, breathe and remain calm. It is important to listen and take in what you are being told. That information may be of utmost importance as your progress in the next phase of your care.
- Ask questions. It is human nature to react negatively to bad news because our emotions are triggered. It is important to take this time to ask questions concerning new medications you may be prescribed, tests that may need to be done, rehabilitation you may need, or even any surgeries that may have to be scheduled.
- Find support. After your appointment, take the time to find relatives and friends who would be available to offer you support. It can even be helpful to join an in-person or virtual support group to connect with a community of people who have experienced a situation similar to yours. You may be surprised at the support that you may receive when you reach out to others.
- Make a plan to move forward. After you have given yourself the necessary time and space to breathe, ask questions, and find support; determine a way in which to move forward. Consider your goals as you move forward. What is it that you wish to achieve and how will you get there in spite of your diagnosis? Be sure to consult with your healthcare provider about what options are available to you that could align with your goals.
As you navigate your health journey, as I am seeking to navigate mine, remain hopeful in the face of bad news. Even though you may have received bad news, all hope is not lost. Just remember to breathe, ask questions, find support, and make a plan to move forward. Best of luck to you as you seek to love a healthier life.
